The estimate of population in July of 1996 is 20,600

The people of Palau are a very warm and friendly people with a rich culture and heritage. Palauans are an attractive dark skinned people. They are great fishermen and boat drivers but very poor car drivers. Many a Palauan skin-dives and brings home good quantities of local fish.  Many Palauans speak several languages even though not formally educated. Betel-nut chewing -- which has long been linked with mouth cancer, is common even in the young, producing red stained gums and teeth. There is no belief in ecology or the environment. Much of the population is Seventh Day Adventist and other Protestant and Catholic churches are on Island. They seem to seriously appreciate non-Palauans speaking even only a few local Language phrases and it is basic respect to try and learn some of the local Palauan language.

Palauans seem to have blind faith and not hold their elected leaders accountable for anything that happens.

Palauan Cars and drivers. While the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, no one seems to know or care that their cars get far lower gas mileage driving 10 Miles per hour instead of 25 when the conditions permit. This causes the typical Palauan to pay  far more for gasoline per mile than most anyone on earth. Car Air conditioning is almost non functional at the lower speeds.

Palau Man Looking for love

Ecology Gasoline engine exhaust billows from behind poorly maintained cars, trucks, busses and boats choking the children and killing old people. The trash fires are almost constant blowing toxic smoke into peoples homes and across the roads. Foreign countries are allowed to rape the local seas of thousands of tons of Tuna. Dugongs and dogs are killed for food (these acts do not seem to be very common any more but is practiced).
